After a couple meetings, Justin informs us that Springfield G.A.M.E., a local gaming and media convention, was being held in October at the Springfield Expo Center, and he asked us if we’d like to represent Children’s Miracle Network and Extra-Life at the event. We lost it. Not only were we going to be able to run a charity event like we had wanted to, we were going to be able to do it at one of the largest gaming venues in Springfield Missouri! Children’s Miracle Network provided us with materials and giveaway items and we were even able to stream live from the event. We were able to spread the word about Extra-Life and how it assisted the local hospitals. We even got to spend some time with Dustin Reaves, an awesome kid that has seen direct support through Children’s Miracle Network. We got to be part of it, and even better, got the privilege of helping it grow.
Three days of gaming and charity work done and Random Encounters was exhausted. We couldn’t have been happier if we tried though. We’d increased the ranks of Extra-Life and even raised a little bit money in donations for our hospital of choice. It was an amazing first outing for us, and we used it as a trial by fire of sorts to gauge how to best run things if we were going to be doing further charity work with Children’s Miracle Network.
Aside from the convention itself, the costumes, booths, and people, it gave us a chance to see things from the other side of the table. It’s an experience we won’t soon forget, and one we hope to improve upon with each new event we have the honor of hosting. This was the first of many, and personally, I can’t wait to see just how far we can take it.
